Day trip to the Funk Zone; quick stops in Santa Barbara’s wine corridor.

I tend to think of Santa Barbara is my little home away from home.  It was the first place that I went tasting, and where I really fell in love with wine. Santa Barbara is  a small beach town full of California character framed by gorgeous mountains.  I love to just pop up on a weekend to get my fix. Here are my "can't miss" places for a quick stop!

Municipal Winemakers

Muni is where I learned wine could be fun.  Their tasting room is an eclectic mix and chill, hipster, and your favorite corner bar. Stocked with all sorts of vintage board games, and a food truck every Sunday it’s a great place to bring friends and family and just hang out for the afternoon. It’s also very dog-friendly. Get a bottle of the Bright White, and claim a bench out on the patio. From there you can watch the waves crashing and all of the Funk Sone unfold before you.

Oh, there are so many wonderful things about The Valley Project. Their wine is truly spectacular. In my opinion, if you’re only going to hit one place to taste in the Funk Zone, this should be the place. The Valley Project's  Viognier and Sauvignon Blanc are not to be missed, and they are doing some really interesting things with Malbec. Make sure you snag Robbie (seen above) as your tasting guide. He's incredibly friendly and over the years has taught me so many things about wine. No question is silly or trivial.  An added bonus here is The Valley Project's spectacular chalk mural of Santa Barbara county by the talented elkpen. Taste your way through the countryside while you are visually stimulated by this outstanding piece.

Lucky Penny

Lucky Penny

This is the best pizza ever had in my entire life. I know that's a bold statement, but I stand by it. I cannot go to Santa Barbara without having a pie. Lucky Penny is right in the heart of the Funk Zone. Inevitably at some point in the day, you’re going to need a pallet cleanser from the wine or something to soak it up. Lucky penny is just the place for that. You cant go wrong ordering The OG; which is oven roasted tomatoes, pork & fennel sausage, calabrian chile, smoked mozzarella, and arugula. Take a break in their quaint outdoor seating or take your pie to the beach or to your next tasting!
