Weed Wine: Rebel Coast Winery's Cannabis Infused Sauvignon Blanc

rebelcoast

Weed and wine, what’s not to like? I first caught wind of Rebel Coast Winery's Cannabis Infused Sauvignon Blanc in January and had to buy a bottle. As you may or may not know, it is illegal to mix alcohol and Marijuana. This product has been crafted in the style of Sauvignon Blanc, and then the alcohol was removed. How you may ask? No idea. And its not listed on their website either... sorry dudes, can't answer that one. A bottle contains 16 milligrams of THC, the chemical compound in cannabis that causes a high. And a single serving has five milligrams of THC. Per Rebel Coast Winery's website “After one glass you won’t be thinking your couch is a hippo with short legs or anything,” the site reads. “We set out to mimic the experience you’d find with traditional wine; a couple glasses will put most people in a great place."  At 59.99 plus shipping, it's on par for edibles, and why the hell not?

After months of waiting (thank you California bureaucracy), my bottle arrived mid-June. Last night we pulled the bottle out of the fridge to do the big taste test. I’m sure you’ve seen posts explaining white wine it is not meant to be served ice cold. Ideally, you want to drink it at around 40 to 50 degrees; most home refrigerators are set to 35 or 40 degrees. This is where I made my rookie mistake. I should have pulled out the bottle and let it set on the counter for about ten minutes to let it warm up a bit, but I was so excited that I cracked that cork and took a big sip! What came back was basically a gulp of light grape juice with the faintest earthy aftertaste. Very sweet, very grapey. The lack of bite from alcohol instantly reminds you that you are not drinking wine, and all that sugar comes right to the front. So then I waited.

Given time to open up, the sweetness is much more subtle, and the earthy THC aftertaste is more prominent. The website states the tasting notes as lemongrass, lavender, and citrus. I can't say that I picked up on any of those, but it had become a more pleasurable drink. That being said, without that alcohol finish, there are no illusions that you are actually drinking wine.

The high from this product was smooth and subtle. With the recommended 5 mg dose (a handy measuring chart is provided on the back of the bottle), I felt relaxed and comfortable. I remember uttering the words “I don’t feel high, I feel hungry.”  It was exactly what I needed for my evening. My partner, on the other hand, was pretty giggly. Paired with the new season of “Queer Eye,” it was  a overall great experience. Will it replace my love of real wine? Absolutely not. Was it fun? Hell yes.
